The Life and the World of the Dalai Lama
Lama Alan · Thubten Wangchen · 99 minutes · recorded July 5, 2025
Thubten Wangchen and Lama Alan Wallace open the CCN Dialogues on the culture the Dalai Lama came from: the Nalanda university tradition that Tibet preserved, and his four commitments, from human values to repaying India's kindness. Lama Alan traces the Dalai Lama's interest in science through to the Mind and Life Institute. Each closes with a memory, Wangchen of an illness the Dalai Lama noticed from afar, Lama Alan of his first audience and the beggar invited to the banquet.
To mark the joyful milestone of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama's 90th birthday, we are releasing, for the first time, the recording of an online dialogue and seminar held in 2022 between Lama Alan Wallace and Venerable Thubten Wangchen, entitled “The Life & World of His Holiness the Dalai Lama”. The conversation takes us through the culture and spiritual heritage from which the Dalai Lama emerged, to the present day, where we explore the current Dalai Lama’s vision, his message of universal compassion, non-violence and human rights, and the impact he has had not simply in Tibet but significantly around the world.
